The forces of the senses

This was in the daily beast news letter today

A former nun says romance among religious women is far more common than many might believe. And it is not just lesbian love; nuns commonly fall in love with their priests or parishioners.

In Ramayana ( the power of senses ) he is described as Indrajit. This is the force of senses and very difficult to conquer

Shankaracharya said the fly is attracted by the light and it flies into a burning Diya ( candle ) to it’s death. The humans have five such senses that drive them to perpetual death

They are the five senses.

Sight ( desire to see wonderful things like nature, pretty or handsome humans, movies etc )

Smell. Loving Different fragrances and driving us crazy

Hearing. Love for music pretty songs etc

Taste. Love for food

Touch. Sex massages etc

All these senses have to be eventually vanquished.

Ramkrishna paramhansa was tested once. Some of his well-wishers thought his physical illness was from lack of sex. And they sent a few beautiful women, naked to his room and he refused to indulge. In fact his power of aversion was so strong, the women left thinking he was a child

But such people are very rare. The senses are not bad. But our attachment to it is bad. Be the master. Be in a situation. Take it or leave it. Makes no difference

I am not critical of the nuns or preists etc. The senses are powerful. Takes time to go beyond their power.

I tried intermittent fasting. And I soon realized that often times I was resting from habit or desire for food even when not needed

So an opportunity to self correct was discovered.

Please don’t walk around with arrogance of knowledge In a trifle even the great sages have lost this battle.

Yet there are a few who have escaped the nets.
