Why is there rebirth?

From Wikipedia. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Makara_(Hindu_mythology)

Simple. You wanted it. You have a long list of dates that are not fulfilled. Travel, food, sex, Fame, power, money, to be a religious teacher- so much. In between every so often, God let’s your negative karma surface and enduring the pain you create a desire of not wanting to come back. So of all the desires that you have created – that is the one desire that helps you ! Pain ( emotional pain )in reality is your friend. It brings out the desire for liberation. That is the famous shark in Hindu Mythology called Makar ( mentioned in Gita )

So until all other desires are worked out you simply cannot escape. (From all past births )

This is a huge deal. You don’t even remember your desires from last week – how will you eliminate those from past births?

There are a few ways to work out desires. However those options are available to those under the guidance of a Guru. Yogananda has mentioned them

The above figure depicts the desire of liberation the shark with a Goddess ( of course ! That desires is saving you )
