An old poem – books versus one letter

Read thousands of books
Scholar I became
Master I was
All in ignorance

My guru gave a book
When I was 20
Dusty it became
Til I learnt to open it

A score later
I opened the book!
ABC’s in it
In Sanskrit it was

A letter a year
Is all I could read
The knowledge so vast
Covered three worlds

I laugh at the scholars
The wise and the sage
Go read thy childish books
Part from me

What is written is trash
Oh Vedas and Upanishads
Be thy humble
A single letter is more

Nothing to say
Nothing to read
Everything is there
Everything is he!
